Eric Anderson Nabs SL6 All Around Creativity Award!!!!

Eric Chase Anderson wins the Steve Lehman 6 Gold Star Award for All Round Creativity because he possesses rare gifts as an illustrator, writer (Chuck Dugan is AWOL) and most recently as the voice of Kristofferson in Fantastic Mr. Fox.

Originally, I planned to give Eric the SL6 Book Award for Chuck Dugan is AWOL but I got delayed. I then ended up going to Fantastic Mr. Fox, directed by Eric's brother Wes. Lo and behold there's Eric name up along side George Clooney's, Meryl Streep's, Bill Murray's and Owen Wilson's!!!!!! I was impressed. The movie was excellent and Eric was great as Kristofferson, one of the young foxes! He held own with some of the best actors in the world.

Anyways, because of Eric's role in Fantastic Mr. Fox I decided to expand the award to take into account all of Eric's talents. Please don't forget to check out his wonderful book Chuck Dugan is AWOL. This “novel with maps” chronicles the adventures of the 18-year-old Chuck Dugan as he attempts to find treasure and fix his family. It’s an original story and a real cliffhanger. I read it in one sitting which is very, very rare for me. I'm looking forward to the sequel.

AND most importantly Eric is a modest person who hasn't let the fame go to his head.

Primus Wins The Steve Lehman 6 Gold Star Award for their Incredible Music Videos

I was turned on to Primus's videos by an old college buddy Dave Lefkowitz (also an SL6 Winner, 5/9/08 ), who just happened to be their manager. I remember when he first introduce me to those guys back in the 80's, they were playing in small bars in San Francisco. Initially, I was unimpressed but by the time the hit the stage at Woodstock in '94 they were one of the best acts. I must say it was a treat to be 3 feet away from Les Claypool on stage. Incredible energy. No one can handle a bass like Les. They're great performers.

I love Primus's music videos. They are one of the only bands who made cool videos. In general music videos tend to be weak, I find them to be too commercialized and poorly filmed. However, Primus managed to put together some really creative pieces. These videos never received enough attention in the mainstream media, thus the award. Congratulations to Les Claypool, Larry "Ler" LaLonde, Tim "Herb" Alexander, the production team and Dave Lefkowitz (manager) for their much deserved Steve Lehman 6 Gold Star Award™.

Dafna Tal wins the Steve Lehman 6 Gold Star Award™ for her project Bridging the Divide. Dafna is an incredibly passionate woman who has undertaken the task of changing how interactions between Palestinians and Israelis are covered by the news media. Rather than focus on violence like the mainstream media, she decided to tell the stories of Israelis and Palestinians who live and work together in peace. Through her work as a peace activist and multimedia storytelling, she has also been able to forge positive relationships between Palestinians and Israelis. Her work is important because it has created a new perspective on life in the Middle East. I feel this is a significant development in media because there is an over emphasis on coverage of death and destruction and doom and gloom. I am happy one young journalist is willing to try to create a more balanced view of the situation.

Marshall Curry Nabs SL6™ For The Priceless Footage of Sharpe James’ Campaign Spokesman.

Marshall Curry, the Director of Street Fight, wins the Steve Lehman 6 Gold Star Award™ for his priceless footage of Rich McGrath, Sharpe James’ Campaign Spokesperson. Street Fight is an excellent political documentary about the Newark, NJ election for mayor. In the film Marshall managed to get this great footage of Rich McGrath, admitting he thought Sharpe James’ treatment of the press was embarrassing (the footage starts 29 minutes and 53 seconds into the film).

As a person with a lot of experience dealing with handlers and PR types, etc., I loved the moment and spontaneously gave Marshall the SL6™ that he deserved. I can’t stand public officials who restrict access to the media and this footage was such a perfect “blank off.” It’s very hard to capture something like that film.

Marshall Curry Professional Biography

Producer, Director, Editor, Director of Photography

Marshall Curry was the director, producer, director of photography, and editor of the Academy Award-nominated documentary, STREET FIGHT.

STREET FIGHT won numerous awards, including the Audience Awards at the Tribeca Film Festival, AFI/Discovery SilverDocs Festival, and Hot Docs Festival. It also received the Jury Prize for Best International Documentary at Hot Docs and was nominated for a Writers Guild of America (WGA) Award. In 2006 it was nominated for a News and Documentary Emmy.

The critically praised film was called “extraordinary” by David Denby (The New Yorker), “vastly entertaining” by John Anderson (Variety), and “filmmaking of the first order” by Scott Foundas (L.A. Weekly).

In 2005 Marshall was selected by Filmmaker Magazine as one of "25 New Faces of Independent Film", and he was awarded the International Documentary Association (IDA) Jacqueline Donnet Filmmaker Award.

In 2007 he received the International Trailblazer Award at MIPDOC in Cannes.

He has been a guest lecturer at Harvard, Duke, NYU, and other colleges, and he has served on juries for the International Documentary Association and Hot Docs Film Festival.

Before making STREET FIGHT, Marshall worked for a number of years as a Senior Producer at Icon Nicholson, a New York multimedia design firm, where he produced and directed interactive documentaries and websites for the Mashantucket Pequot Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and others.

Independently, he has shot, edited, and directed a number of short films including THE DAY THE INDIANS WON, (for the Rainforest Foundation US), which tells the story of the Panará Indians in Brazil who successfully won back their land, and NEGRIL ELEMENTARY, (for the Rockhouse Foundation), which chronicles an education project in Jamaica.

Prior to filmmaking, Marshall taught English in Guanajuato, Mexico, worked in public radio, and taught government in Washington DC.

He is a graduate of Swarthmore College where he studied Comparative Religion and was a Eugene Lang Scholar. He was also a Jane Addams Fellow at Indiana University's Center on Philanthropy, where he wrote about the history, philosophy, and economics of non-profits.
